One thing we see fairly often is a house with plenty of insulation in one area and almost nothing where it matters somewhere else.

A lot of people call asking about spray foam insulation because they’ve heard about its high R-value. Spray foam is useful, especially when we need insulation and air sealing in the same area. It expands into cracks and gaps where uncontrolled air movement can create drafts and make heating and cooling harder.
But we don’t start every project by deciding it needs foam insulation.
In an open attic, cellulose insulation or blown-in fiberglass may be the practical choice for adding coverage. Spray foam insulation may make more sense around rim joists, certain wall assemblies, rooflines, crawl spaces, or other areas where sealing is part of the problem. Open-cell spray foam and closed-cell foam also aren’t interchangeable.
