A lot of homeowners don’t start by thinking about insulation. They notice the upstairs stays hot, a room along an outside wall never feels comfortable, or the heating keeps running longer than expected. Comfort is usually what gets the conversation started.
We can find which areas deserve a closer look pretty quickly.
Sometimes the attic doesn’t have enough insulation. Sometimes the bigger issue is air leaks around framing, penetrations, rim joists, or other gaps. Older walls can have thin or inconsistent coverage, especially when the insulation has been there for years. In those cases, adding more insulation in the wrong location won’t solve much.
For builders and contractors, we’re looking at the building assembly, access, R-value requirements, and where spray foam insulation, batt insulation, blown-in insulation, or another material fits the job.

The foam is sprayed flawlessly.
Danny did an excellent job, and I would recommend Colony for spray foam insulation work.
Clean, quick, professional, and on time.
Danny answered all of my questions with confidence and did excellent work. One of the best installers I have seen.
My first floor struggled to make it above 60 degrees—now it’s 72 degrees and the floors are nice and warm.
Danny and his partner did an awesome job encapsulating my crawl space. They cleaned it out thoroughly, and the finished work exceeded my expectations.
Completed everything exactly as promised.
Colony Insulation was able to insulate our attic just one day after we signed the contract. The work was great, and they left the space neat and clean.
One thing we see fairly often is someone coming into the project already convinced they need spray foam.
Sometimes they do.
Spray foam insulation is useful where insulation and air sealing need to work together. Foam expands into cracks and gaps, so it can make sense in walls, rim joists, rooflines, crawl spaces, and other areas where uncontrolled air movement is part of the problem.
But spray foam isn’t automatically the right choice everywhere. Blown-in insulation can make more sense for an attic that needs additional coverage. Fiberglass batt insulation works well in many accessible wall and framing cavities. Cellulose and mineral wool have their place too.
We look at the kind of space first, then select the type of insulation that makes sense for that part of the house or building.

Over time, attic insulation can be low, uneven, disturbed, or simply not performing well with the rest of the home.
It’s more than spending money adding material until the attic looks full. Air sealing matters, and the finished insulation needs to provide the appropriate R-value for the assembly and current project requirements.
On some Southfield homes, that means improving blown-in insulation. On others, spray foam insulation may make more sense in specific areas where air leaks are difficult to control another way.
Commercial insulation work isn’t just a larger version of a home insulation job.
A remodel, addition, new construction project, office, or warehouse can have different assemblies and installation requirements from one part of the building to another. Walls may call for one insulation product while rooflines or other spaces need something different.
That’s why we want to see the plans, the building, or both before making the recommendation. It gives the builder, general contractor, or property owner a clearer scope before the work gets underway.
